American Horror Story: Coven Season Wrap-Up

by: Koleen Kaffan

American Horror Story: Coven, the third installment of the FX miniseries, came to a close last night with a new Supreme being named after thirteen episodes of debauchery, graphic mutilations, backstabbing and plenty of murder and reanimation that would make H.P. Lovecraft proud. Executive producers and co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have said that the two major themes running through Coven are feminism (even though all of the female characters are at each other’s throats, literally and figuratively) and racism. The cast itself reads like a Who’s Who of exciting female actresses: Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Frances Conroy, Sarah Paulson, Gabourey Sidibe, Emma Roberts, Patti LuPone, Jamie Brewer, Lily Rabe and Taissa Farmiga. read more

Mars Attacks: First Born in May

From IDW Publishing.

First Born tells a deceptively quiet story of the after effects of the Martian invasion: in a devastated neighborhood, a few survivors try to rebuild their lives. One of those survivors is an infant Martian, left behind in the attacks. But was she left behind on accident, or as part of a more nefarious plan? Does nature versus nurture apply to horrible invaders from Mars? These are some of the themes being explored in this series. Also: giant bugs.

Written by Chris Ryall and Sam Kieth and art by Sam Kieth with covers by Loston Wallace and Sam Kieth. read more

The Walking Dead #120 Review

Review By:  Sean McLaughlin

At the conclusion of The Walking Dead issue 120, we’ve officially made it halfway through the “All Out War” storyline (6 of 12).  And when we last left the action, Negan and the Saviors appeared poised to put a violent end to the Alexandria Safe Zone, once and for all.  Which begs the question… are there still six more chapters to this story arch, when our heroes are faced with such impossible odds?  But to ponder this question would doubt the road that Robert Kirkman has paved for his audience…..and after ten years, the man has earned this level of respect.  I’ll be the first to admit that I had wondered how Rick and the gang would escape the impending doom at the end of issue of 119.  Not only are these questions answered, but the latest installment invokes a level of emotion and violence unlike any other in recent memory.  Considering the amount of chaos and gore that the TWD universe has witnessed since issue 100 (particularly the last few issues), this is saying a lot. read more
