Today The Hollywood Reporter exclusively shared the teaser for ‘Some Kind of Hate’ and an interview with director Adam Egypt Mortimer. The film, which is Mortimer’s directorial debut, is premiering at the Stanley Film Festival in May. Mortimer said “I think of this as kind of a feminist slasher movie.” The story centers around a girl named Moira (Sirra McCormick) who is bullied into suicide and resurrected by a teenage boy who is pushed by his classmates to do it. When she comes back, Moira takes her revenge on persecutors in slasher-style violence. Mortimer points out Moira is not a ghost, but more like Jason Voorhees, who is a physical being, saying “I think people have the tendency to call her a ghost because she’s a girl and not a 7-foot-tall guy.”
He goes on to say that his slasher is unique not only because of gender, but because Moira speaks and adds “Our slasher has an intense emotional life. It’s like, at her core she’s a 17-year-old girl whose emotions just spiraled completely. She gets to talk about the reasons for her desire for revenge. It’s really chilling to see this blood soaked girl with this razor blade shrieking at people about why she‘s killing them.”
Mortimer and co-writer Brian DeLeeuw wanted their film to be socially relevant in the way some of their favorite slashers were, including the adaptation of Clive Barker’s ‘Candyman’, which addressed gentrification and slavery. Bullying was a hot topic when they were developing the script in 2012. Mortimer said “What we found very quickly is it was a great springboard for violence and revenge and the horrible stuff that people do to each other even before you introduce a slasher into the movie.”
He says that their other main inspiration was Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett’s ‘A Horrible Way To Die’. Moritmer said “I was like, ‘oh, I’m seeing something where I recognize everything I want to do. It was a horror movie, but it was also a drama with heavy emotion and real statements about humanity… but also an awesome f—ing horror movie.” Influencing them to change their approach to the story, Mortimer added “I said, ‘what would a literary slasher film be like?'”
Mortimer talks about the teaser, which included some of his favorite scenes in the film. He described the scene with Moira facing off with Katlin (Grace Phipps) saying “It’s a complete reversal of the sort of scene you would expect between the slasher and the young beautiful girl that’s trying to survive.” In another scene in the teaser Moria faces her original bully, which Mortimer describes saying “It’s horrific. The movie’s really about, what if your past came back for you and was a fully formed, physical thing that was going to kill you.”
Mortimer, his wife Amanda Mortimer, Gabriela Revilla Lugo (Revek) and Caliber’s Dallas Sonnier and Jack Heller produced the film. ‘Some Kind of Hate’ premiers May 2 at the Stanley Film Festival. You can view the teaser trailer on The Hollywood Reporter.
