‘Velvet Buzzsaw’: The Horror News Network Review

Hitting Netflix on February 1st, Velvet Buzzsaw certainly has gained a bit of attention.  Circling around a self-absorbed art scene, the film is very much a satire mixed with horror.  These artists greed comes back to bite them, when they take advantage of an unknown, and deceased, artists’ paintings, which also just happen to be painted with human blood. Filmmaker Dan Gilroy, not only sets up a glossy and absurdly shallow scenario, but does so with some real star power behind him.  Velvet Buzzsaw features Jake Gyllenhaal, John Malkovich, Renee, Russo, Zawe Ashton, Toni Collette, and Natalia Dyer.  With a cast like this combined with the perfect horror setup, what could go wrong? read more

2019 Oscar Nominations Ignore Horror Films After Incredible Wins in 2018

Did you think that The Shape of Water’s and Get Out’s big wins at the Academy Awards last year meant that horror movies would finally be getting a fair shake during awards season? Think again! The 2019 Oscar nominations are out, and the horror genre is only represented with a single nomination for A Quiet Place in the category of Best Sound Editing.

Between these two films, the horror genre was represented in many of the Academy’s most prestigious categories. read more

‘Nightcrawler’ Alums Jake Gyllenhaal & Dan Gilroy Paint a Horrifying Picture in New Trailer for ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’

Writer/director Dan Gilroy and leading man Jake Gyllenhaal first showed us their collective dark side with 2014’s Nightcrawler. Set in the seedy underworld of Los Angeles, the subversive crime thriller became an instant critical darling and earned about five times its meager budget at the box office. Now, the two are re-teaming for a new film which captures the horrors of the modern art scene.

Netflix just released a new trailer today for Velvet Buzzsaw, a movie where, “mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce.” In the clip, tapestries come to life to maim, mangle, and burn their highfalutin owners. The trailer shows off Gilroy’s signature blend of heightened realism, satire, and dark imagery, and you can watch the entire clip for yourself below: read more

‘Hereditary’: The Horror News Network Review

First time writer/director Ari Aster’s Hereditary opens in theaters this weekend after months of unbelievable hype. A24, the studio behind similar projects like The Witch and It Comes at Night, have been sure to market the film with clever and haunting promotional clips and tales of traumatized critics at film festival previews. Most movies which are blown so full of pre-release hot air tend to disappoint simply due to the sheer inability to live up to the vast expectations such buzz inevitably produces. However, Hereditary is one of those rare cases where everything you’ve heard about it is true. It’s deeply unsettling, it’s brilliantly acted and directed, and it comes from a school of filmmaking which expired decades ago to make way for louder, gaudier productions. For the same reasons why it’s excellent, this movie isn’t going to win over casual Friday night audiences; but Hereditary has all of the makings of a modern horror classic for discerning horror fans. Unforgettably haunting and “sleep with the lights on” scary, this movie is easily one of the best horror films of the decade. read more
