Flatliners Trailer Released

The trailer for Flatliners (the remake of the 1990 horror drama staring Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland) has just been released by Sony Pictures.

The film will be directed by Niels Arden Oplev (the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) with a screenplay by Ben Ripley (Species III).  It will star Ellen Page (Juno), Diego Luna (Star Wars: Rogue One), Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), James Norton (Black Mirror) and Kiersey Clemons (Austin & Ally).

For those needing a little refresher about this film, The Hollywood Reporter states that it is a story about “…medical students who, obsessed by the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment: stopping their hearts for short periods of time. Each triggers a near-death experience, giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife. But as their experiments become increasingly dangerous, they are haunted by the sins of their past, brought on by the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.” read more

It’s a Wrap on Suspiria Remake

Forty years ago Dario Argento’s giallo masterpiece Suspiria was released and now production has wrapped on it’s remake. While remakes are generally not something to get excited for, especially when it’s a remake of a genre classic, this particular remake features an amazing cast and a very passionate director.

An all-star cast of Tilda Swinton, Chloe Grace Moretz, Dakota Johnson and Mia Goth was directed by Luca Guadagnino (A Bigger Splash) who told Empire back in 2015 that, “the film by Dario Argento was a very indicative moment of growing up for me because I saw it when I was 14, I think it changed me forever. I was obsessed with Argento through all my adolescence.” read more

GhostBusters Box Office: D.O.A. or Here to Stay?

The weekend estimates for the Ghostbusters remake have been released and the new film finished second to The Secret Life of Pets with a total of $46 million at the box office from July 14th to July 17th .  This total is comprised of Thursday night, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday totals.  Many analysts predicted a second place finish to current animated juggernaut Pets, but is this a disappointment or a hopeful start for the most embattled film of the summer?

Looking closer at the box office totals, Ghostbusters debuted with 3.4 million on Thursday, which is a competitive number, comparing to other films that finished around the $50 million dollar mark for their first weekends.  One alarming stat shows that Ghostbusters was the only film in the top 35 at the box office this weekend that declined from Friday to Saturday ($17,200,000 vs. $16,350,000). Every other film at the local multiplex saw an increase in attendance on Saturday.  Sunday’s current estimates clock in at $12,450,000 which shows the film dropping in attendance across the weekend. read more

Nic Winding Refn Remaking WITCHFINDER GENERAL

We have more horror news out of Cannes today.  Nicolas Winding Refn and producer Rubert Preston have acquired the rights to remake  Michael Reeves’ Witchfinder General (The Conqueror Worm in the US), which starred Vincent Price, Ian Ogilvy and Hilary Dwyer.   Refn is developing the remake with Preston and will be a producer, not a director.

Based on the Roband Bassett novel and set in Norfolk, England circa 1645, the original film was a fictionalized account of the horrific crimes committed by   real-life witch hunter Mathew Hopkins during the English Civil War.  It was so violent it stirred controversy in the U.K., and achieved cult status in the U.S.   Refn and Preston plan to bring the story to a new audience and to go into production next year.  read more
