Horror News Network’s Comic Awards 2017: Best Writer(s)

Horror News Network has selected Mike Mignola and Scott Allie as our Co-Writers of the Year for their work on Dark Horse Comics’ B.P.R.D. The Devil You Know.

Mignola and Allie (along with Sebastian and Max Fiumara and Dave Stewart) won last year’s Best Series award for Abe Sapien, and the team has picked off exactly where they left off with The Devil You Know.  After the death of Hellboy, the Mignolaverse continued on with a number of excellent mini-series (both historical and modern), but the foundation of the line has always been the B.P.R.D. titles, which continually introduced new characters and expanded the scope of the world that the stories take place in. read more

‘Rumble’ Writer John Arcudi: The Horror News Network Interview

John Arcudi is one of the most prolific writers in the history of Dark Horse Comics and one of the main architects of the Mignolaverse.  His work on titles such as Abe Sapien, B.P.R.D., and Lobster Johnson fleshed out the “House that Hellboy Built” and added a deeper historical context to the universe.

Fans of his work on the Mignolaverse will be happy to hear that Arcudi is about ready to start a second run on his critically acclaimed Image Comics title RumbleRumble is the story of an ancient warrior who, after being resurrected into the body of a scarecrow, embarks on a quest to find his actual physical form in a modern day urban setting.  Joined by his human guide Bobby LaRosa and a host of Kirby-esque monsters, the title is a wild ride, riddled with mythological archetypes and gonzo, monster slicing action. read more

‘Hellboy: KrampusNacht’ Artist Adam Hughes: The Horror News Network Interview

If you have been reading comic books for the past twenty five years, Adam Hughes is no stranger to you.  Hughes has worked for every major company in the industry and has gained a cult following due to his gorgeous cover work, most prominently on the Catwoman and Wonder Woman series.

Even though Hughes has worked for Hellboy’s home base Dark Horse Comics before, he had never illustrated an issue featuring “Big Red”, up to now that is….  Just in time for the holiday season, original Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Hughes’ Hellboy: Krampusnacht brings together two demonic titans for a yuletide slugfest. read more

Theatrical Release Date Announced for ‘Hellboy’ Reboot Starring David Harbour

Fans have been excited about the upcoming Hellboy reboot, starring David Harbour of Stranger Things, since franchise creator Mike Mignola first teased an image of Harbour in full makeup back in early September. Today, we’re one step closer to the film being a reality! Lionsgate and Millennium have set the film’s theatrical release for January 11, 2019.

Traditionally, a January release date for a new movie was evidence that the studio did not have much faith in the quality of their product. January has typically been a notorious dumping ground for some of the worst films of all genres. Fortunately, the stigma associated with the month has recently begun to change as studios who have released good movies during the first month of the year have seen strong financial returns. In January of 2017, A Monster Calls and M. Night Shyamalan’s Split both exceeded expectations critically and financially. It turns out, people will pay to see good movies any month of the year, and they’ll stay home for bad ones! read more

‘Mr. Higgins Comes Home’ Artist Warwick Johnson-Cadwell: The Horror News Network Interview

Just in time for Halloween, Mike Mignola and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell have cooked up a delicious original graphic novel treat for all fans of classic Universal and Hammer horror films entitled Mr. Higgins Comes Home. Horror News Network had the pleasure of speaking to artist Warwick Johnson-Cadwell and he discussed his unique style, monster movies, and “sad werewolves”.

Horror News Network: How did you become involved with Mr. Higgins?

Warwick Johnson-Cadwell: Mike and I were on a Sketch Panel at the UK’s Thought Bubble Festival and we got the chance to briefly chat and he suggested we might work on something together. He is such a hero of mine; I dared not think that would turn out the way it did. He got back in touch with this idea he had and I was amazed, then Scott Allie got in touch too and slowly it started to become an actual reality. I would get physical pangs of excitement while working on the pages and I still find it hard to believe even though the book is (about to be) on the shelf now. I cannot thank Mike, Scott and Dark Horse enough. read more

Mike Mignola Shares First Look at David Harbour’s ‘Hellboy’ Makeup

Sometimes a project comes along where the announcement causes fans to instantly picture what an actor or actress might look like in his or her role. The announcement that David Harbour would play the titular character in the upcoming movie reboot of Hellboy was exactly that kind of project for me. Based on Harbour’s beloved performance and line delivery in Stranger Things, I could already hear his voice spouting off the demonic antihero’s snarky quips and biting comments. Better yet, Harbour looks the part when you consider everything from the defining structure of his face to his imposing body shape and size. read more

Daniel Dae Kim to Replace Ed Skrein in ‘Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen’

Variety is reporting that Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii 5-0, Lost) is currently in talks to replace Ed Skrein as Major Ben Daimio in the upcoming Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen.

The character (who first appeared in the Hellboy comics by Mike Mignola) is a Japanese-American were-jaguar.

Horror News Network reported on the original controversy that broke out on Skrein’s twitter page surrounding the casting decision. Skrein was accused of taking a role that should have gone to an Asian-American actor.  The actor quickly left the project and stated that it was not his intention to get involved in yet another “whitewashing” issue. read more

Hellboy to Join Cast of Playable Characters in ‘Injustice 2’ as DLC

Incredible characters joining unrelated franchises is nothing new to the wonderful world of video games. My personal favorite crossover was when Spawn and Link joined the cast of Soulcalibur II back in 2002 as console exclusives. NetherRealm studios have kept the tradition alive by including characters like Freddy, Jason, and The Predator to previous entries in their Mortal Kombat franchise. Today they’ve announced that an upcoming DLC pack for Injustice 2, their popular DC superhero fighting game, will be adding a popular character from an entirely different comic book universe! read more
