Before Krampus injected some needed chills into traditional yuletide proceedings, the original dark spirit of Christmas was Frau Perchta (and her many iterations such as Frau Holda, Frau Holle, La Befana, etc.). This Germanic legend embodies many of our preconceived notions (at least in appearance) of a classic witch, complete with scraggly hair, a long nose, and a broom stick made of straw. And although she is less well known than the horned figure that takes over her role, she is equally terrifying, misunderstood, and engaging.
For horror fans, nothing says “happy holidays” quite like Krampus. The latest Hellboy title, Hellboy: Krampusnacht features Hellboy vs everyone’s favorite half-goat, half-demon, Krampus.
The 36-page one-shot story is written by legendary creator, Mike Mignola with artwork by Adam Hughes. If there were any questions on how Hughes would work within the Hellboy universe, it is answered quickly as his style fits the book perfectly. He especially shines when we get to see the many different faces of Krampus himself. read more
Fans of Mike Mignola and his expansive “Mignolaverse” have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming months.
Not only will fans see the return of the B.P.R.D. in the new ongoing series B.P.R.D: Devil You Know (which will be released on July 26th), but Dark Horse Comics will also be publishing a two limited series and a one-shot that feature some of the most evil villains ever featured in the pages of Hellboy.
The titles include: Rasputin: Voice of the Dragon written by Mignola and Chris Roberson and illustrated by Christopher Mitten (a five issue series out on November 29th), Koshchei the Deathless written by Mignola with art by Ben Stenbeck (running six issues with a release date of January 10th, 2018), and Hellboy: Krampusnacht by Mignola and the legendary Adam Hughes (a one-shot just in time for the holidays on December 20th). read more
Horror News Network reported in October that Krampus and Trick ‘r Treat director Michael Dougherty would write the next installment in the Godzilla reboot, but Variety has reported today that he will also direct Godzilla 2.
Godzilla 2 will not only serve as the sequel to the successful reboot, but it will also lead to a highly anticipated rematch between King Kong and Godzilla in 2020. Variety’s Justin Kroll explained how this “Mega-Monster Universe” took shape when “In October 2015, Legendary and Warner Bros. made a joint announcement that all future “King Kong” and “Godzilla” films would be developed by Legendary and distributed by Warner Bros., starting with Kong: Skull Island in March (3/10/17). Legendary currently holds a distribution deal with Universal, but in order to re-team Godzilla and King Kong, Legendary decided to send the rights back over to Warner Bros. to be able to create this new “ecosystem” of giant super-species, both classic and new.” read more
After the Halloween season ends, and Christmas knocks all of the plastic skulls and jack-o’-lanterns off the store shelves, most horror fans have traditionally found solace in Tim Burton’s stop motion classic The Nightmare Before Christmas or evil Santa Clauses in Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night. At the dawn of the new millennium, fans found another “kindred spirit” in the form of Krampus, primarily through Michael Dougherty’s film of the same name. read more
Variety has reported that Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields will be writing the script to the highly anticipated 2019 Legendary Pictures film, Godzilla 2. The two have most recently worked for Legendary on last year’s Krampus, which was written by them (along with Todd Casey) and directed by Dougherty.
Michael Dougherty’s other instant horror classic was 2007’s Trick ‘r Treat. Originally released straight to video by Warner Bros., the film has since gained a rabid fanbase; and new content based on the franchise continues to be produced to this day. Both Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus have been lauded by fans and critics for their stylistic portrayals of their monster characters, which hearken back to the older days of movie monster filmmaking. read more
