‘Koshchei The Deathless’ Issue #2 Review

Mike Mignola’s Koshchei The Deathless #2 drops this Wednesday and swiftly picks up right where issue number one left off, in a pub located in Hell with Koshchei and Hellboy catching up.  While Koshchei continues to weave the background of the plotline through this vehicle of storytelling, the tale is peppered with Hellboy’s sarcastic comments, which are always welcomed by fans of Mignolaverse.

This issue sees the story goes deeper into the mysticism of Koshchei and his dark world. The humans and beast seem interchangeable, with the animals almost more trustworthy than the humans at times. This is some of the brilliance of Mike Mignola’s writing.  Over the years and across many series, he shows what many would consider abominable, outcast creatures with a human side.  With that said, Mignola is also genius to know that much evil and strife comes in human form.  The big payoff with Koshchei The Deathless #2 is a well-crafted battle scene featuring monstrous dragons and a rather intriguing cliffhanger. read more

Koshchei The Deathless #1 Review

This week Mike Mignola brings horror comic fans Koshchei The Deathless, the first of a six-part mini- series from Dark Horse comics. Teaming up with Ben Stenback and Dave Stewart, Mignola brings back Hellboy’s immortal rival in what proves to be an engaging addition to Mignolaverse for 2018.

With the introductory issue to this series giving the background and framework for the series, it doesn’t layout the plot in a formulaic or bland way. The story opens with a bang, literally.  We see Koshchei in battle with Hellboy, but as the plot shifts, the tale of his backstory is told through his own eyes in a conversational tone to Hellboy.  This is one of the many way Mignola brilliantly draws the reader into the Koshchei The Deathless series, by giving Koshchei humanity and depth. The allows the reader to actually care more about this character and his struggle with good versus evil. read more
