‘Hungry Ghosts’ Co-Writer Joel Rose: The Horror News Network Interview

When the Berger Books imprint was announced last February, many long-time Vertigo Comics fans were naturally excited at the prospect of being able to enjoy a whole new set of original and edgy stories, all under the guidance of Karen Berger.  The first series from the imprint (in conjunction with Dark Horse Comics), Hungry Ghosts, is no exception, although many fans were surprised to see the name of celebrity chef and television host Anthony Bourdain on the cover.

Horror News Network was excited to get a chance to interview co-writer Joel Rose about his new series, his work with Bourdain, and being reunited with Berger. read more

Karen Berger’s Dark Horse Imprint Announces First Series Including Anthony Bourdain’s ‘Hungry Ghosts’

As reported by Horror News Network in February, Karen Berger (of Vertigo fame) and Dark Horse Comics signed a deal for Berger to create her own imprint entitled Berger Books.  With the annual San Diego Comic Con right around the corner, the first series and collections have been announced including four new comics series (which will later be collected as graphic novels): Hungry Ghosts by Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose, Incognegro: Renaissance by Mat Johnson and Warren Pleece, Mata Hari by Emma Beeby and Ariela Kristantina, and The Seeds by Ann Nocenti and David Aja. Berger Books will also publish a tenth-anniversary edition of Incognegro: A Graphic Mystery by Mat Johnson and Warren Pleece (originally published by Vertigo in 2009) and The Originals: The Essential Edition (originally published by Vertigo in 2004) by Dave Gibbons. Hungry Ghosts will undoubtedly be of the greatest interest to horror fans and it comes from an unlikely source: world famous chef and traveller Anthony Bourdain (Parts Unknown, Kitchen Confidential) and co-writer Joel Rose (Get Jiro!; Kill, Kill, Faster, Faster).  According to the official press release, the series will “…tell haunting tales of terror, irritable spirits, and horribly strange beings in Hungry Ghosts, a four-issue anthology series including art by Vanesa Del Rey, Leo Manco, Alberto Ponticelli, Paul Pope, and Mateus Santolouco.” The horror anthology was “Inspired by the Japanese Edo Period game Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai or “100 Candles”, played by samurai warriors to test their courage, Hungry Ghosts reimagines this classic game of dread and terror as a circle of international chefs invoke modern tales of horror, terrifying yokai, yorei, and obake, all with the common thread of food.” Traditionally, the term “hungry ghost” is associated with Buddhism and occurs when someone commits a moral crime or transgression and must wander the living world as an unhappy spirit, seeking redemption from ancestors and loved ones. Hungry Ghosts #1 goes on sale January 31, 2018.  Stay tuned to Horror News Network for more information about this title and others coming soon from Berger Books.
