Horror News Network’s Comic Awards 2017: Best Series

Horror News Network is proud to present our Best On-Going Series of 2017 Award to Dark Horse Comics’ B.P.R.D. The Devil You Know.

Many horror comic fans were upset to see the B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth series come to an end in 2016, with no sign of a return on the horizon, until last Summer’s joyous announcement that the tales of the B.P.R.D. would indeed continue.  The Devil You Know (co-written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, illustrated by long-time B.P.R.D. artist Laurence Campbell, colored by Dave Stewart, and with covers by Duncan Fegredo) picks up directly after the climatic defeat of the Ogdru Hem.  Unfortunately, the world that remains is just as dangerous as before, with a demonic threat never before witnessed in the Mignolaverse. read more

Horror News Network’s Comic Awards 2017: Best Writer(s)

Horror News Network has selected Mike Mignola and Scott Allie as our Co-Writers of the Year for their work on Dark Horse Comics’ B.P.R.D. The Devil You Know.

Mignola and Allie (along with Sebastian and Max Fiumara and Dave Stewart) won last year’s Best Series award for Abe Sapien, and the team has picked off exactly where they left off with The Devil You Know.  After the death of Hellboy, the Mignolaverse continued on with a number of excellent mini-series (both historical and modern), but the foundation of the line has always been the B.P.R.D. titles, which continually introduced new characters and expanded the scope of the world that the stories take place in. read more

Horror News Network’s 2017 Horror Comic Awards: Best Artist

Horror News Network is proud to present 2017’s Best Artist award to Tomm Coker.

Tomm Coker’s art stood out this year in 2017’s Best Limited Series, The Black Monday Murders, and Coker proved to be the perfect partner for Jonathan Hickman’s nightmare-noir take on an occult conspiracy.  Coker’s photo-realistic art style captured the human terror and he also got to apply his skills to a number of demonic characters in this year’s “Unionized Labor” story arc. read more

Horror News Network’s 2017 Horror Comic Awards: Best Mini-Series (Non-Monthly Title)

Horror News Network’s top mini-series (non-monthly title) for 2017 is Image Comics’ occult conspiracy title The Black Monday Murders.

This is the second year in a row that The Black Monday Murders has taken the Best Limited Series prize, and with good reason, as it is one of the smartest, layered stories being produced in the medium today.  Written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Tomm Coker, The Black Monday Murders is “an elaborate story involving clandestine banking cartels, Russian vampires, Black popes, magical one-percenters, and more oddities in a world that resembles our own a little too much.”  read more

Horror News Network’s Comic Awards 2017: Best Cover

Horror News Network’s Award for Best Cover of 2017 has been awarded to Titan Comics’ Hookjaw #5 (Nick Percival Cover).

Percival’s cover art captures the best aspects of the relaunch of the controversial Action weekly series from the 1970’s, with the titular shark ready to chomp a helpless victim, while a fellow diver looks on in horror.  Percival, an artist who has worked for nearly ever comic book publisher as well as Wizards of the West Coast and multiple video game designers, produced more than a dozen excellent covers for the U.K. company in 2017.  His cover for Hookjaw #5 stands out due to his distinct style of painting, and like classic Tales from the Crypt and Creepy covers, it is the type of cover that immediately draws the eye of the horror fan browsing the racks of their local comic shop. read more
