Horror News Network’s 2017 Horror Comic Awards: Best Mini-Series (Non-Monthly Title)

Horror News Network’s top mini-series (non-monthly title) for 2017 is Image Comics’ occult conspiracy title The Black Monday Murders.

This is the second year in a row that The Black Monday Murders has taken the Best Limited Series prize, and with good reason, as it is one of the smartest, layered stories being produced in the medium today.  Written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Tomm Coker, The Black Monday Murders is “an elaborate story involving clandestine banking cartels, Russian vampires, Black popes, magical one-percenters, and more oddities in a world that resembles our own a little too much.”  read more

Horror News Network’s Comic Awards 2017: Best Cover

Horror News Network’s Award for Best Cover of 2017 has been awarded to Titan Comics’ Hookjaw #5 (Nick Percival Cover).

Percival’s cover art captures the best aspects of the relaunch of the controversial Action weekly series from the 1970’s, with the titular shark ready to chomp a helpless victim, while a fellow diver looks on in horror.  Percival, an artist who has worked for nearly ever comic book publisher as well as Wizards of the West Coast and multiple video game designers, produced more than a dozen excellent covers for the U.K. company in 2017.  His cover for Hookjaw #5 stands out due to his distinct style of painting, and like classic Tales from the Crypt and Creepy covers, it is the type of cover that immediately draws the eye of the horror fan browsing the racks of their local comic shop. read more

Horror News Network’s 2017 Comic Awards: Len Wein Named Horror Comic Honoree of the Year

Horror News Network is proud to honor Len Wein as this year’s Horror Comic Award Honoree.

The world of comics lost another giant when Len Wein passed away in September of this year.   Wein was not only responsible for the creation of Wolverine in the seminal Incredible Hulk #181 (along with the late Herb Trimpe), but he also wrote the adventures of “the Green Goliath” for five consecutive years in the 1970’s, one of the longest tenures on the title by any writer to date.

And speaking of “green”, Wein was also responsible for the creation of one of the greatest horror characters in the history of comics: The Swamp Thing.  Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson captured the attention of all horror comic fans in House of Secrets #92 (1971) which introduced Dr. Alec Holland and his more famous mossy alter-ego to the world.  Due to the “muck monster’s” immediate popularity with fans, Swamp Thing soon earned his own series, running for a total of 24 issues (with Wein scripting the first 13 issues). read more
