‘Wonder Woman’ Director Patty Jenkins Attached to Horror Project for AMC Streaming Service, Shudder

Patty Jenkins, the critically-acclaimed director of Monster and Wonder Woman is attached to an upcoming horror project for AMC’s horror/thriller/suspense streaming service, Shudder. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jenkins will work on a project entitled Riprore.

This announcement comes with the incredible news surrounding the critical success and financial performance of Wonder Woman. The film is currently the third highest critically rated superhero film of all time on Rotten Tomatoes. It also dominated the box office this weekend, quickly becoming the highest grossing movie opening ever directed by a woman. Better yet, recent returns show the film will have legs at the multiplex… it earned nearly $12 million on Monday alone. To put that into perspective, Doctor Strange (another origin film for a superhero character) earned about $6 million on it’s first Monday at the box office, and just a couple of weeks ago Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 earned $9.8 million on it’s first Monday. This kind of critical and financial performance will undoubtedly make Jenkins one of the most in-demand directors working in Hollywood… which makes it all the more exciting that she will be returning to the kind of dark content she is known for with 2003’s Monster! read more

Deadline is reporting that Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez’s comic book Locke and Key is about to get a one hour pilot episode from Hulu to be directed by Dr. Strange’s Scott Derrickson.

Also involved in the project is the producer of Bates Motel and The Strain Carlton Cuse, who  “…developed Locke & Key with Hill who wrote the script on spec. The finished script was sent to one director, Derrickson, who came on board right away and, if the pilot goes to series, is expected to stay with the show for the first season and direct multiple episodes before segueing to the Doctor Strange sequel.”  Cuse will also serve as showrunner if the pilot turns into a series. read more

Dr. Strange Enchants Box Office to the Tune of $85 Million

Surpassing inital industry estimates of $70 million, Dr. Strange reignited November box office receipts with an estimated $84,989 million dollar haul.

The critical and financial success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (to the envy of DC fans and Warner Brothers executives) is well established, but there is always trepidation when a new character makes the leap from a traditional four-color comic to the silver screen.  Doctor Strange, anchored by an all-star cast and lead by Benedict Cumberbatch,  proves that general audiences, hardcore fans, and critics have not had their fill of Marvel’s vast super hero universe.   read more

Doctor Strange Strong Out of the Gate with $32.6 Million on First Day of Release

Doctor Strange, Marvel’s first foray into the supernatural side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, opened with a robust $32.6 million on its first day of release. This total also includes $9.4 million in Thursday previews.

As reported by Seth Kelly of Variety, the film’s estimated weekend “…would put “Doctor Strange” ahead of other Marvel film openings like “Thor” ($65.7 million) and “Ant-Man” ($57.2 million), but behind characters with higher name-recognition like 2008’s “Iron Man” ($98.6 million) and, of course, films that band together multiple heroes like “Marvel’s The Avengers” ($207.4 million). Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Doctor Strange” is posting numbers that most closely align with 2013’s “Thor: The Dark World” ($85.7 million).
