DC Universe Cancels ‘Swamp Thing’ After Airing One Episode

After just premiering on DC Universe last Friday, Swamp Thing is dead in the water. Variety has just reported the series’ cancellation, with no additional details on the abrupt announcement. The news immediately follows generally positive reviews of the first episode, and healthy buzz over the series in general.

The official Twitter page for the series has not yet been updated with the news, and its latest post is business as usual:

Production on ‘Swamp Thing’ Series Unexpectedly Halted; Teaser Trailer Debuts

Swamp Thing fans received some good new and bad news today about DC Universe’s upcoming adaptation of the classic Alan Moore stories.

The good news is that a teaser for the upcoming series launched like an alligator snapping up a heron in the Okefenokee wetlands, featuring a first look at the comic-accurate costume.   The bad news is that “ole’ Swampy” may not be long for the streaming world as (according to the Hollywood Reporter) “…the original 13-episode order for the project has been cut to 10 after experiencing creative differences with its home at Warners-backed streaming platform DC Universe.”  Despite this news, the series will still premiere on May 31. read more

Ian Ziering Cast as Blue Devil in ‘Swamp Thing’ Streaming Series

Ian Ziering announced today via twitter that he will be joining the cast of DC Universe’s streaming series Swamp Thing as the lovable Blue Devil.

The actor, known for his roles on Beverly Hills 90210 and Syfy’s Sharknado series, will step into the blue and yellow pirate boots of one of DC’s prominent supernatural characters.  The character first debuted in 1984 (ala a special preview insert in Firestorm #24) and was created by Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn, and Paris Cullins. His solo series ran for nearly three years and he would later appear as a member of the Justice League and Shadowpact.  The stunt man turned supernatural hero was also rumored to be a part of the long gestating and maligned Justice League Dark film.  At this time it appears that JLD is DOA, but having two competing versions of the same character on the small screen and the silver screen has never stopped DC before, so don’t be surprised if fans get two versions to further confuse them. read more

DC Universe Officially Announce Mears, Bean Added to ‘Swamp Thing’

The swamp just added some elite company.  According to their official Twitter account (see below), the DC Universe has announced that genre veterans Derek Mears and Andy Bean have joined the cast of the upcoming series adaptation of Swamp Thing.  DC is continuing to add to its stable of content for their new streaming service, with the exclusive series Titans already four episodes in to its initial run on the network.

For Swamp Thing, based on the comic book which debuted in 1971 but rose to prominence in the mid-80’s after legendary writer Alan Moore took the reins, this will be the second attempt at a television series.  In the early 1990’s, the USA network hosted a live action adaptation starring Dick Durock and Mark Lindsay Chapman which ran for three seasons.  The current Swamp Thing project boasts a robust and impressive cast already for DC.  Mears and Bean will be joining the already-announced roster of Jennifer Beals (The Grudge 2), Virginia Madsen (Candyman), Will Patton (2018’s Halloween) and Crystal Reed (MTV’s Teen Wolf.) read more

Derek Mears Cast as Swamp Thing in the Upcoming DC Universe Television Series

Derek Mears is no stranger to monster roles, having played Jason Voorhees (in the 2009 Friday the 13th reboot), a Predator, and many other aliens and creatures of the night over the course of his career.  Well, it’s time to add another to Mear’s extensive menagerie, as the over-sized actor just landed a plumb role as the title character in DC Universe’s upcoming Swamp Thing television series.

Splash Report broke the news earlier today and they also added that while Mears will play Swamp Thing (in a practical effects suit nonetheless) he will not be portraying the soul of the monster, Dr. Alec Holland.  At this time it is not clear who will play Holland, or how they will incorporate the performances of both the monster and his human (or plant) soul. read more
