Director Doug Liman Promises a Unique Take on DC Comics’ Dark Universe Film

In an interview with IGN, director Doug Liman promised that he would approach his film Dark Universe (formerly Justice League Dark) differently than previous installments in the fledgling DC Extended Universe.  Liman told IGN that “I love those characters, and I love Warner Bros., and I love [producer] Scott Rudin, and it’s — and you know, I get asked to come in and do things that are “unconventional.” If people want conventional, they don’t come to me.”

Liman further reiterated his different approach to the supernatural heroes film stating, “So even if I wanted to be a little bit more conventional, like, the system doesn’t want me to be. But since I do treat every project as a form of a film school, “OK I haven’t done that genre and how am I going to do it and how am I going to do it in a way that no one’s done it before,” so that’s, you know, I haven’t done a comic book film, and that’s — am I going to do it in a new way that’s unlike what anyone else has ever done, and come up with a couple of rules for myself of what we’re not going to do that other people do.” read more

Doug Liman to Direct D.C. Comics Dark Universe Film

Justin Kroll of Variety is reporting that Doug Liman will direct the long gestating Justice League Dark feature, now titled Dark Universe.

Justice League Dark was originally conceived as a Guillermo del Toro project in 2012.  del Toro has been updating progress on the film ever since, but due to a large number of projects on his plate, it appears that Liman will step into del Toro’s directing shoes.  It is unclear how much of del Toro’s pre-production work, including a “story Bible” that outlined character designs and contained extensive notes on the dark side of the D.C. universe, will be salvaged or if Liman and Warner Brothers will go in a different direction. read more
