del Toro’s ‘The Shape of Water’ was Inspired by ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’

Every fan knows that Guillermo del Toro is a superfan of horror and science fiction.  Unlike most fans however, del Toro also happens to be one of the best working directors in Hollywood.

del Toro’s current film The Shape of Water has garnered a wealth of praise, and it would be a great surprise if the director’s work was not nominated once again for multiple awards.

What most critics may not know however is that del Toro’s inspiration for his cold war parable was his childhood memories about Universal’s Creature from the Black Lagoon. read more

‘Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen’ Director Neil Marshall Promises R-Rated Content and Traditional Special Effects

Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) recently spoke to fellow horror director Mick Garris on his podcast (Post Mortem with Mick Garris) about his career in film and television and also revealed some exciting news about his upcoming film, Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen.

Garris asked Marshall about the R-rating and if he was going to be “…allowed to be more extreme” to which the director replied, “We’ve been granted permission to do it R-rated, which for me is just like taking the cuffs off.”  While Marshall did state that he is going to exercise some restraint, and that he was “…not going to force it to be R-rated”, he did follow-up on his initial comments, saying that “…obviously, the success of things like Deadpool and Logan have not hurt that cause. But, also, when you go back the original material, it is kind of bloody, so I’m going to embrace that.” read more

Universal Announces Writer for The Creature From The Black Lagoon Remake

The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Universal has hired screen writer Will Beall to pen a new film based on classic Universal monster The Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Beall is best known for television work for such series as Castle and Training Day.  He is also the writer for James Wan’s upcoming Aquaman film and has been announced as one of the writers on the long gestating Legend of Conan.   His only film work to date is 2013’s Gangster Squad.

The Creature From the Black Lagoon is part of the planned Universal Monster Universe which is being guided by Chris Morgan and Alex Kurtzman. The first film in the series will be The Mummy, which is set for release on June 9th of this year.  It is unclear at this point where the Creature film fits in this potential series of monster movies (or when production will start), but Universal has a lot riding on the success of the Mummy, and the box office on said film will do much to influence the longevity of the series. read more
