Steven Spielberg to Resurrect ‘Amazing Stories’ for Apple TV Plus

On Monday, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook announced Apple TV Plus, the tech giants biggest push into streaming video. In a video that played at the event, Steven Spielberg said that he would be heading up the new Amazing Stories series for Apple TV Plus.

Amazing Stories is a science fiction magazine which debuted in April 1926 by Hugo Gernsback’s Experimenter Publishing. It was the first magazine devoted solely to science fiction.

Amazing Stories came to TV screens across the country in the 80s as the anthology series ran for two seasons which totaled 45 episodes from 1985 to 1987. The series boasted some heavy directorial talent including Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Matthew Robbins, Joe Dante, Martin Scorsese, Tom Holland, Mick Garris and Tobe Hooper. There was talent in front of the camera as well with Gregory Hines, Sid Caesar, Dom DeLuise, Harvey Keitel, Robert Picardo, John Lithgow, Mark Hamill, Andrew McCarthy, Danny DeVito, Patrick Swayze, David Carradine, Kyra Sedgewick and Weird Al Yankovic. Apple Teams With A24 to Produce Slate of Films

Variety is reporting that Apple has entered into an agreement with A24 to will produce a slate of films for the tech giant. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this agreement as many of A24’s flicks receive an R rating while Apple is known as a family-oriented company. While there are no details as of yet on the deal, it is said to be a multiyear agreement and involve multiple films.

Since coming on the scene in 2012, A24 has brought a solid slate of horror/sci-fi films including Ex Machina, The Witch, The Blackcoat’s Daughter, It Comes at Night, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and Hereditary. As of 2018, A24 has received a whopping twenty-four Academy Award nominations. read more
