Horror News Network is proud to announce that Cullen Bunn is the 2016 Horror Comic Award’s writer of the year.

Although Bunn is most known to horror fans as the writer and co-creator of Dark Horse Comics’ supernatural hit Harrow County, he has been nothing but prolific in terms of his total output this year.   Along with other work in the horror genre such as Blood Feud, Night Trap, and Sixth Gun, he also worked “’round-the-clock” on major superhero titles such as Deadpool and the Uncanny X-men as well as retro titles like Voltron, Micronauts, and Battlestar Galactica.  His ability to juggle so many projects in so many different genres proves his versatility and ability to deliver engaging stories to a wide variety of fans on a monthly basis. read more

Horror News Network is proud to announce that the recipient of the 2016 Horror Comic Honorree Award is Gary Reed.

Unfortunately, many artists only gain the recognition they deserve after an untimely death. Gary Reed (5/2/56 –10/2/16) certainly falls into this category.  Reed is most prominently remembered by fans as one of the writers of Deadworld, but his greater influence comes from his role as a publisher.  read more

Too Much Horror Business: Box Office Winners and Losers of 2016

Although October 2016’s slate of horror films were at an all time low, this didn’t stop studios from making money at the your local cinema at other times of the year.  2016 was another profitable year for horror films, with the exception of a few high profile bombs.

The undisputed horror box office champ was The Conjuring 2.  James Wan’s sequel to his 2013 film that showcased the further adventures of renowned ghost hunters, Ed and Loraine Warren, raked in $102.5 million domestically, and $320.2 million worldwide.  The largest foreign market happened to be Mexico, where the Conjuring 2 made $20.5 million.  Although the film was not the critical success of Wan’s first film, it appears like there is no stopping this franchise, whether Wan returns to the director’s chair or not. read more

Ghostbusters’ Box Office Sinks Plans for Sequel

Due to diminished returns at the box office and dwindling fan interest, it appears that the New Ghostbusters crew will not be getting their promised sequel.  According to Pamela McClintock of the Hollywood Reporter, the film’s failure to generate repeat business, coupled with a weak summer season, has doomed the franchise starter.

McClintok stated that “Sony hardly is alone in suffering from audience rejection of sequels this summer. But film chief Tom Rothman and his team, along with partner Village Roadshow, had high hopes for launching a live-action Ghostbusters “universe.” Now they are preparing for steep losses (think $70 million-plus) and an uncertain future for the franchise.”  Although the “break-even” number for Sony was unofficially set at $300 million, other reporters such as Entertainment Weekly’s Nicole Sperling have gone so far as to say that Ghostbusters needs to gross at least $400 million to break even due to exorbitant marketing costs.  The film currently sits at $180,899,659 world wide, with hardly any more help coming from the international markets and a rapidly shrinking domestic screen count. read more
