Syfy has picked up the rights to ‘Van Helsing,’ a 13-episode sci-fi series from Nomadic Picture (Fargo, Hell On Wheels). Neil LaBute is the writer and showrunner for the new take on the Dracula myth. The series will begin producing in Vancouver, BC in January 2016. It will premiere in the fall of 2016. It centers on the story of Vanessa Helsing, the daugher of Dracula hunter Abraham Van Helsing. She awakens to fiver years in the future to find that vampires have haken over the world. She possesses a unique power over them and must use it to lead the fight to save humanity.
Nomadic Pictures Co-Chariman said “Van Helsing represents a new mythology in sci-fi by challenging traditional vampire rules. The series is unique in exploring a world completely dominated by vampires, while the human characters have to learn the importance of working together to ensure their survival.”
Syfy’s Chris Regina added “Van Helsing reimagines a classic story in a compelling new way, featuring a bold and complex heroine.”
Nomadic Pictures is producing ‘Van Helsing.’ Chad Oakes and Mike Frislev from Nomadic Pictures are executive producers, along with LaBute, Simon Barry (Continuum), Evan Tyler (Industry Works), Dave Brown (Echo Lake Entertainment) and Daniel March (Dynamic). Nomadic will distribute within Candada, while Dynamic Television will handle U.S. and global disturbution.
