Ryan Murphy Reveals Details on the Characters of ‘American Horror Story: Cult’

American Horror Story: Cult is right around the corner. As with every new season of the anthology series, fans are chomping at the bit to learn what kind of mysterious and unusual roles their favorite series-regulars will be taking on this time around. The production of this season has been much less secretive than during previous seasons, but we still have many more questions about the show and its cast than answers. Variety reports that Ryan Murphy shared a few key details a recent screening about some characters we will soon know all too well when the show begins to air on September 5th. Here’s what we learned about the following performers’ roles on Season 7:

  • Evan Peters will be playing multiple historical cult leaders, including a present-day cult leader on the show. His fictional character will be named Kai Anderson; and his historical characters include Charles Manson, Jim Jones, David Koresh, and Andy Warhol. Murphy had this to say about how the show will handle the historical characters: “We really examine how those people rise to power and why did people follow them.” Murphy praised Peters’ performance this season as the “best performance” of his career.
  • Lena Dunham will appear in one episode as Valerie Solanas, a woman who attempted to assassinate Andy Warhol. Murphy said that Dunham’s episode will be about “the female rage then and in the country now.”
  • Emma Roberts will play a Michigan newscaster who excels in her position at the expense of her peers, according to Murphy, “simply because she’s much more superficial and willing to do what it takes to survive.”

While she won’t appear in Cult, Murphy has a good feeling that fan-favorite Jessica Lange will someday return to American Horror Story. In response to a question about whether Lange will appear on the show in the future, Murphy said, “I’m sure she’ll be back some day. It’s a very fluid way of working to have a group of people you love and can bring back and forth.”
