The theatrical debut of the Resident Evil reboot is set to open on Labor Day weekend of this year; on September 3rd, Sony Screen Gems will be distributing the reboot which was written and directed by Johnannes Roberts.
The story takes place in 1998 Raccoon City with direct ties to Capcom’s classic horror survival games. “With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences”, said Roberts, according to Deadline.
The movie will star Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy, and Neal McDonough as William Birkin. The production team consists of Robert Kulzer, James Harris, and Hartley Gorenstein.
While Sony will be distributing the movie in the US, Elevation has Canada, Constantin has German speaking countries, Metropolitan has France and Sony Pictures Releasing International will be handling everywhere else. With the previous six Resident Evil movies generating $1.2 billion total, there are high hopes that this reboot will do well at the box office.
