Restored Version Of Dawn of the Dead To Be Shown at Venice Film Festival

According to Screen Daily, a restored version of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead will premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which runs from August 31st to September 10th.  The critically-acclaimed horror cult classic, originally released in 1978, was Romero’s second entry into his often-imitated series of innovative zombie films (along with Night of the Living Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead and Survival of the Dead).

The new version of Dawn will be shown at a midnight screening on September 2nd in high definition 4K, a meticulous remaster that also brought the Phantasm film franchise back to life recently in July.

Famed horror director Dario Argento (Suspiria), who was a producer on the original film, will introduce the European cut to the Venice crowd.  “I am particularly pleased that Zombi (the title given to the film in Italy) is being re-released after so many years,” said Argento.  “I have great memories of Zombi because it was so important for my career and for George’s as well.”

Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, which stars David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger, and Gaylen Ross, will play in the Venice Classics area of the festival.  The 115-minute version was edited and curated by Argento for the European market, with music by horror film rock heroes Goblin.  Additionally, the film was restored by Koch Media in collaboration with Norton Trust and Antonello Cuomo.

It is great to see Mr. Romero finally receiving the worldwide acclaim he deserves for inventing the modern horror zombie genre.  Films such as Zombieland, the Dawn of the Dead reboot (2004) and World War Z, along with television series such as The Walking Dead and iZombie, owe their popularity to the trail blazed by the iconic director beginning back in 1968.

Alien Valley

Starring: Matthew M. Baxter, Bryan Bonner, Chuck Zukowski

Synopsis: There have been over thirty thousand cattle mutilations in Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico since the 1960’s- gruesome scenes where cows are found with surgical-like incisions, missing organs and completely drained of blood. Often, there are no predator tracks to be found. Despite the devastating impact on local ranchers and an FBI investigation, there have been zero mutilation related convictions. This has spawned a whole host of UFO tales and governmental conspiracies, and Colorado’s San Luis Valley is the epicenter for the phenomenon. Essentially Ghost Hunters gone wrong, ALIEN VALLEY is the story of Dave, a young cameraman for a paranormal reality show, who travels to the San Luis Valley to shoot an episode on cattle mutilations. He develops a friendship with Rose, their attractive BLM liaison, who accompanies them on their investigation. Rose has one mission: keep the crew off of the restricted BLM lands known as The Commons, the supposed location of a crashed UFO from the 1960’s. The show’s producer, Rob, presses forward his all too common formula. Interview the believers and skeptics. Conduct an intense nighttime investigation. And finally, reveal whether or not this paranormal mystery has been solved. When Dave meets a real mutilation expert who claims that there were extraterrestrial survivors from the UFO crash in the 60’s, he is thoroughly spooked. Suddenly, the episode’s chief contact goes missing. Without their contact’s ranch, the crew is without a location for the show’s nighttime investigation. Rob exploits Dave and Rose’s budding relationship and sneaks the crew onto The Commons for their stakeout. After entering the restricted lands, the crew finds they’ve actually breached an Air Force quarantine zone. It’s not long before they discover a mutilated cow and what killed it. As an alien predator picks off the crewmembers, Dave and Rose struggle to escape Alien Valley and one of our military’s most sinister secrets.

MVD Entertainment Group furthers the distribution of Arrow Video in the US with several new titles in May…

HIRED TO KILL (Director Approved Special Edition Blu-ray + DVD)

No man on earth could get him out of prison alive. Seven women will try.

Release Date: May 17th

List Price: $29.95

Starring legendary actors Oliver Reed (Gladiator, The Brood) and George Kennedy (The Delta Force and the Naked Gun series), Hired to Kill is a hugely entertaining action flick featuring guns, girls and a plethora of budget-busting explosions for good measure.

Action movie staple Brian Thompson (whose brief turn in 1984’s The Terminator led to a starring role in the 1986 Sylvester Stallone vehicle Cobra) stars as Frank Ryan, a mercenary sent to track down a rebel leader in hostile territory. Posing as a fashion designer, he’ll be aided by a posse of beautiful – but deadly – women.

KILLER DAMES: TWO GOTHIC CHILLERS BY EMILIO P. MIRAGLIA [Blu-ray + DVD]

4 disc Limited Edition box set containing The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave and The Red Queen Kills Seven Times

Release Date: May 24th

List Price: $69.95

At the height of the Italian giallo boom in the early 1970s, scores of filmmakers turned their hand to crafting their own unique takes on these lurid murder-mystery thrillers. This limited edition double pack features two distinctive offerings by Emilio P. Miraglia, which meld twisty whodunit narratives with gothic chills. In The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave, troubled aristocrat Alan Cunningham (Anthony Steffen, Django the B*stard), haunted by the death of his first wife Evelyn, tries to move on by marrying the seductive Gladys (Marina Malfatti, All the Colours of the Dark). Marital bliss is short-lived, however, as various relatives meet untimely and gruesome deaths, prompting speculation that a vengeful Evelyn has risen from the grave… Meanwhile, in The Red Queen Kills Seven Times, an age-old family curse hits sisters Kitty (Barbara Bouchet, Milano Calibro 9) and Franziska (Marina Malfatti) following the death of their grandfather Tobias (Rudolf Schündler, The Exorcist, Suspiria). Every hundred years, so the legend goes, the bloodthirsty Red Queen returns and claims seven fresh victims. Was Tobias just the first… and are Kitty and Franziska next? With both films making their worldwide Blu-ray debuts in stunning new 2K restorations, there has never been a better time to explore these little-seen giallo gems!

BLOOD BATH (2 Disc – Limited Edition)

For this release Arrow Video has searched through the vaults to bring you all four versions of Blood Bath

Release Date: May 31st

List Price: $49.95

The films of Roger Corman are often as well-known for their behind-the-scenes stories as they are the ones unfolding on the screen. He famously made Little Shop of Horrors in just two days using sets left over from A Bucket of Blood and shot The Terror over a long weekend because bad weather prevented him from playing tennis. But none of these tales is quite so complex, or quite so extraordinary, as the making of Blood Bath. The saga began when Corman invested in a Yugoslavian Krimi-like picture entitled Operation Titian just prior to it going into production. Insisting it be filmed in English, he sent actors William Campbell and Patrick Magee, and uncredited story editor Francis Ford Coppola (all fresh from Dementia 13), to Dubrovnik to make a US-friendly movie but wasn’t satisfied with the end results. First it was re-cut and re-scored to create Portrait in Terror, a film more in line with drive-in tastes, then it was handed over to Jack Hill (Spider Baby), followed by Stephanie Rothman (Terminal Island), each undertaking reshoots that resulted in a vampire picture by the name of Blood Bath. One final twist was provided when a TV version was required, chopping scenes and adding others to create Track of the Vampire. For this release Arrow Video has searched through the vaults to bring you all four versions of Blood Bath, newly restored from the best materials available to provide a definitive release of one of Corman’s craziest ventures.

Dark Sky Films brings CHERRY TREE to Blu-ray and DVD

A YOUNG WOMAN LOOKING FOR A MIRACLE TO SAVE HER FATHER FINDS A SAVIOR, BUT THE COST MAY BE MORE THAN SHE CAN BEAR

CHERRY TREE

The Disturbing New Horror Film From the Director of ‘Wake Wood’ Comes to Blu-ray, DVD  and Digital HD on April 5, 2016

“Coasts along at such an energetic clip that it’s hard to not have a little fun with all the crazy witch madness.” – Scott Weinberg, The Horror Show

 https://youtu.be/bn2kBW6ORgg

Evil takes root in the most unexpected place in CHERRY TREE, an original and deeply disturbing film about a desperate young woman drawn into a world of horror from which there may be no escape. From the director of the acclaimed Wake Wood, the film comes ONE EYED GIRL, a gripping and award-winning debut film about a young man drawn to a cult-like sect. The thriller comes to Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD on April 5, 2016.

Faith’s (Naomi Battrick, Crossing Lines, Stonemouth) world is turned upside down after she finds out that her beloved father is dying. When the mysteriously alluring Sissy Young (Anna Walton, Reign, Hellboy II: The Golden Army) becomes her field hockey coach, Faith finds a compassionate spirit and much-needed mother figure. Little does she know that Sissy is the head of a centuries-old witches’ coven that has resided in her hometown of Orchard for centuries. The coven uses the fruit of an ancient cherry tree in a bloody secret ritual that restores life to the dead and dying.

Offering to cure her father in exchange for a child, Sissy strikes a dangerous bargain with Faith, who suddenly finds herself pregnant with a baby that’s growing at an alarming rate. But with the clock to the child’s birth ticking down and the true intention of Sissy’s plans for humanity becoming more apparent, Faith and her father must stand together in order to save both their lives.

CHERRY TREE is the sexy, gory and haunting new film by David Keating, the critically acclaimed director of Wake Wood, and the producers of The Hallow and Let Us Prey. A deeply satisfying shocker that boldly brings elements of Rosemary’s Baby and Suspiria into a new cinematic era, CHERRY TREE was an official selection at the 2015 Fantasia Film Festival and FrightFest.

New Trailer & Poster for Turkish Horror Film NACIYE

LUTFU EMRE CICEK’S FEATURE DIRECTORIAL DEBUT

“NAC?YE” STARRING DERYA ALABORA

TO BE RELEASED IN TURKEY BY CHANTIER FILMS

ON MARCH 11, 2016 WITH AN 18+ RATING

The Turkish Horror Film Which World-Premiered in October 2015 at Screamfest  LA

Is Riding a Wave of Unprecedented Media Interest Following Turkish Premiere at

!f Istanbul Film Festival Just Three Weeks Ago

(March 8, 2016 – Istanbul, Turkey) Director Lufu Emre Cicek’s Horror/ Suspense/Thriller “Naciye” will be released theatrically by distributor Chantier Films in his home country of Turkey on March 11, 2016. “Naciye” had its Turkish premiere at !f Istanbul, where the film sold out both screenings in just hours. The controversial film has received national exposure in all the major Turkish newspapers and on the top entertainment/news shows prior to and since its Turkish premiere, fueling huge awareness of and interest in it. “Naciye” had its World Premiere at Screamfest in Los Angeles in October 2015, where it received critical and public praise.

“Naciye” has received an 18+ rating in Turkey, which is comparable to an NC-17 rating in the United States. “Naciye” is a new kind of horror film for Turkey and audiences have responded to it, along with the chance to see its star, Derya Alabora, in a very different kind of role for her. Alabora, an award-winning actress and a major star in Turkey, has been honored with the Best Supporting Actress SiYAD Turkish Film Critics Association Award 2007 for “Adam and the Devil” and the Best Actress Turkish Cinema Award 1997 for “Innocence.”

In “Naciye,” a pregnant couple (Esin Harvey, Gorkem Mertsoz) travels for the weekend to check on the house they rented on a whim for the remainder of the pregnancy. On their first night at the secluded home they encounter the dangerous woman, (Alabora) who claims to be its rightful owner.

Çiçek was born in Turkey and then moved to the U.S. after high school. Like many teenagers, he grew up watching horror films and as a filmmaker, he has been influenced by movies like “Rosemary’s Baby,” “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” and “Suspiria,” as well as the works of Pedro Almodovar. After he moved back to Turkey, Çiçek pursued his love of filmmaking. His favorite genre, horror, was a natural choice for his first feature.

“With this movie I wanted to make something that would be familiar to horror fans in its homages to horror movie tropes but maintain its Turkish touches, like the island setting, the soap opera-esque hysteria of the leads, Naciye’s style of clothing and the music.” said Çiçek.

Instead of making a Turkish or American horror film, Çiçek made a psychological drama/international horror film influenced by both his Turkish upbringing and love of American Horror films. The result is a uniquely satisfyingly scary artistic feature directorial debut from a unique voice in film.

The film was directed, written, produced and edited by Çiçek, produced by Refik Zafer Çiçek and Begum Malaz, executive produced by Naciye Sonbay and Ekmel Sonbay with stunning cinematography by Kamil Satir.

The island house, where she grew up is her “safe place.” She will do anything to protect that house and everything in it. “Bengi” is pregnant. The relationship with her husband, who always decides what is best for everyone including their unborn child, and “Bengi,” is complicated. They are on their way to the island house to spend the weekend. “Bengi’s” husband rented it without telling her. She is not excited about it at all, and she feels uneasy about everything. Derya Alabora (“Naciye”) and Esin Harvey (“Bengi”) portray the two women who face each other in a matter of life and death. As the tension escalates, mysterious stories are revealed about the island house and “Naciye.”
