M. Night Shyamalan Finds Leading Man For Mystery Movie

Very few details about M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming horror/thriller film have been revealed, but at least we now know who will lead the impressive ensemble cast.

Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal–who has shined in such lesser-known gems as The Motorcycle Diaries and The King–has signed on to star in Shyamalan’s as-yet-unnamed movie, as reported by Deadline.

Bernal will head the cast that already includes Alex Wolff (Hereditary), Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects), Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit), Aaron Pierre (Krypton), Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Jupiter Ascending), Ken Leung (Lost) and Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread).

Shyamalan will (as usual) write and direct the film, which is slated for a July 23, 2021 release. He also will produce the movie with Ashwin Rajan and Marc Bienstock. Steven Schneider will act as executive producer.

Plot details have been very scarce, but it is expected the film will have an eerie atmosphere with some sort of twist ending. The filmmaker has hinted that this movie–as well as another that is part of a two-movie deal with Universal Pictures–will be “weird and dark.”

As reported here in Horror News Network, Shyamalan has said he likes his films to deal with “complicated things, and not necessarily take the audience where they’re comfortable–both during or even at the end.”

The director added that, for him, “there are ideas (that) don’t quite have the meat yet that makes it so I’m ready to commit two years of my life to making. They have to gestate a little bit. But there were two ideas where, right away, I was thinking about making them.”

Shyamalan, of course, really hit the big time with 1999’s The Sixth Sense, and then continued with Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2016). His most recent film, 2019’s Glass, was a big box office hit, grossing $247 million on a budget of $20 million.
