Synopsis: THE NEW ERA OF HELLRAISER BEGINS! As promised, Clive Barker did not only return to the Hellraiser universe, he re- imagined it! Nothing is as simple as it seems – the old ways have been destroyed and a dangerous new world lies in its wake. Where are Elliott Spencer and Kirsty Cotton? Who will rule and who will serve?
Our Thoughts: Any horror comic fan will tell you the previous Hellraiser comic series was amazing. “Hellraiser: The Darkwatch #1†does not disappoint. The story begins with a “sinner†purposely trying to get into Hell to see the evil cenobites and all that Hell has to offer. What he finds is nothing like what he’s heard. Hell is under new management now! While the issue harkens back to the previous series, with readers catching a glimpse of Kirsty Cotton and Captain Spencer (aka “Pinheadâ€ÂÂ) being held captive and tortured like the other souls, the story also shows a whole new world. Harry D’Amour is the new Lord of Hell.
Story: Barker and Siefert take their time setting the scene and dark, brooding mood, as the reader gets a glimpse into the different areas, and stunning differences from what the scene used to be. While they guide you through this journey, there’s so much going on, that the reader is drawn in. This is really important for comic fans. There’s nothing more irritating than spending your money on a tiresome issue #1 background explanation. Barker and Siefert do not bore you by any means. Once Harry D’Amour comes face to face with the new “visitor,†and sees who he is, that’s when it gets real folks. The fight and torture scenes are terrifyingly terrific with enough disturbing scenes to satisfy the true horror lover.
Art: Tom Garcia does an incredible job at capturing the mood set by Barker and Seifert. His detailed style along with Vladimir Popov’s coloring complements the general tone of the story. Don’t fret my gore hounds! The fight and torture scenes are gorey, distinct, and extremely well done.
“HELLRAISER: The DarkWatch†#1 opens up a whole new world for fans of the series and delivers. Horror comic fans will barely close the last page before checking off Issue #2 on their pull list. “HELLRAISER: The DarkWatch†Issue #1 is published by BOOM Studios and is out now.
