HBO’s ‘True Detective’ Season Three Trailer Teases a Return to the Macabre Tone of First Season

If the first trailer is any indication, it appears that HBO’s season three of True Detective will harken back to the macabre vibe of the inaugural season when it debuts this January.

The trailer features many of the sign-posts that fans of the original “Yellow King” story line will recognize, such as the back water setting, time skips, and strange visuals and situations.  The third season has no connections to the first one, but it is clear that the producers of the show (and this trailer) certainly want fans to remember the creepy first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson more so than the Chinatown-esque second season that featured Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn.

This season’s cast follows in the tradition of the first two, bringing in accomplished actors such as Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali, Deborah Ayorinde, Carmen Ejogo, Michael Greyeyes, and Stephen Dorff  among others.  As reported earlier this year by Horror News Network, “Series creator Nic Pizzolatto is once again the sole writer for the third season (with the exception of Episode 4, which he co-wrote with David Milch).  Pizzolatto will also direct many of the episodes, along with Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room) and Daniel Sackheim (Better Call SaulThe Americans).”
