Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern Join Cast of ‘War of the Worlds’

Prepare for battle with Martians as THR is reporting that Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern will lead the cast of War of the Worlds.

The eight-part series is described as follows:

In this new take on War Of The Worlds, when astronomers detect a transmission from another galaxy, it is definitive proof of intelligent extra-terrestrial life. Earth’s population waits for further contact with baited breath, but does not have to wait long. Within days, mankind is all but wiped out, with just pockets of humanity are left in an eerily deserted world. As alien ships appear in the sky, the survivors ask a burning question — who are these attackers and why are they hell-bent on our destruction?

The series is said to be set in Europe and will be overseen by Howard Overman, creator of the British series Misfits. Also joining War is Lea Drucker, Natasha Little and Daisy Edgar Jones.

H.G. Wells authored the 287-page novel War of the Worlds in 1897. Published by William Heinemann in 1898, the story tells the tale of aliens whose home planet has become uninhabitable and they travel to Earth in an attempt to claim the planet as their own, wiping out humanity in the process.

On the day before Halloween in 1938, Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater Company caused nationwide panic with their broadcast of War of the Worlds. As Americans huddled around their radios, they heard the terrifying reports of a Martian attack on major cities across the globe. The broadcast has become such as part of Americana that in January of 2003 it was made part of the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.
