‘Furiosa’–‘Mad Max’ Prequel–Will Hit The Road In 2023

The highly anticipated Furiosa–the background story prequel to the 2015 blockbuster Mad MaxFury Road–is expected to start shouting in 2021, but fans will have to wait awhile to catch it in theaters.

Warner Bros. this week confirmed that Furiosa will have its theatrical release June 23, 2023, as reported by movieweb.com. The prequel will have a traditional release, only hitting movie theaters–and not appearing on HBO Max as the movie plans for its 2021 slate of films.

The title character of Furiosa–as reported here in Horror News Network–will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy, a veteran of such genre films as M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and Glass. Charlize Theron nailed that part in Fury Road, and Taylor-Joy said she approaches the role knowing the challenges ahead. “I fell in love with Furiosa,” she said, “and the way Charlize presented her. She did such an incredible job. I can’t even think about trying to step (into those shoes). It has to be something different.”

Two other standout actors will join Taylor-Joy for this adventure–Chris Hemsworth (of Thor fame) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman and next year’s Candyman). It’s not yet known what part Abdul-Mateen II will step into, but it has been leaked that Hemsworth will play a character called Dementus, who is described as being in his 30s or 40s and “breathtakingly handsome.” The character has “an angel’s face scarred by a deep forehead wound stitched together with shiny chrome staples.” Ouch!

Hemsworth said he has been enamored of the Mad Max films for a long time. “They meant the world to me as a kid growing up in Australia,” he said. “Mad Max was the pinnacle and a huge reason why I got into the business of telling stories.”

Furiosa will be directed, co-written (with Nico Lathouris) and co-produced (with Doug Mitchell) by George Miller, who also helmed and co-wrote Fury Road. This prequel reportedly will tell the story of a younger Furiosa, in the years before she teamed up with Max Rockatansky.
