I'm going to be starting a webcomic early next year, and I wanted to get some input from the people that read them on what you do and don't like. For instance, do you have any feelings on frequency of updates? what's too much, what's too little, etc?
just any comments/suggestions/criticisms you might have of webcomics I'd love to hear them!

2 pages a week seemed to be the standard for webcomics. Spread 'em out.. like a page on Sunday and one on Wednesday or similar distance between days.
If you have a large story and a bunch of pages already finished, or ready when you start posting them online, 3 pages a week wouldn't be too bad.. like Mon, Wed, and Fri.
There are two webcomics that I have been reading on a regular basis.. One is The Becoming, which is released twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays, I believe) and the other is Orion the Hunter, which is released every Thursday
It really depends on how much you feel you can pump out on a regular basis and still keep readers interested, but not too overwhelmed. _________________

I think once in a week is quite enough, at least in the beginning. It is pretty rare for people to have time for more updates, at least if they are full pages, with inks, colors and everything.Obviously you should have a bunch of pages finished before you start so that you don't have to keep a too frantic pace. With webcomics it is all about what feels right to you. The readers will come if they love the idea and art, not with updating more or less, as long as it is consistant.
How and where are you planning to publish the pages? For me a big thing is that the page itself works and doesn't look too colorful/full to overpower the comic itself. Also having to open every page one at a time is a huge no-no. The reading experience should be fluid so that the reader can just forget about the technical part and concentrate on the story. _________________ Comic coloring and stuff http://sarisariola.blogspot.com/

Hey guys,
Thanks very much for the input!
I've been thinking that my plan is to put the first 5 pages (or first scene) up all at once, as an introduction to the book, and then go maybe a page-to-two pages a week after that. Unfortunately I'm not exactly as far ahead in pages completed as I wanted to be this close to launch (Jan 1st!), but I'm doing well enough that consistency shouldn't be a problem.
Where I actually post the comic is going to be as simple a layout as possible. It's going to be the comic, navigation, and not much else.
If anyone is interested, feel free to follow the evolution of my comic Dead Meat at www.eatdeadmeat.com
Any other tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Hello to everyone!
I just wanted to drop you all a line to announce the launching of my first online, graphic novel DEAD MEAT on January 1st, 2011! This has been close to 10 years in the making, and I'm really psyched about finally getting it out there. It's going to be scary, it's going to be violent (so NOT for kids), and it's going to be a wild, wild ride that I hope you enjoy reading as much as I've enjoyed creating. So head on over to www.eatdeadmeat.com on Jan. 1st to get started (provided everything doesn't go horribly, horribly awry!)! I'll be posting a page a day on the first week as an introduction, and then a page every Monday after that!
However, you can also head over to the official blog at deadmeatcomic.blogspot.com to find out how this crazy thing started in the first place!
Thanks for all the support, and I hope you get hooked!

Hello Clay. Been a bit busy when you first asked. Hope i can help with whatever naff advice i can give.
When you're starting a comic, my advice is to keep many aspects of it simple. Complex storylines are fair game, but as i said in another thread, the presentation and dialogue for said story should be straight forward. In my experience, its best not to linger on narrative mysticism whilst pretending that a target audience, particularly with webcomics, is going to immediately give a toss. Keep the "appeal factor" direct to them throughout.
Normally i find myself always to make brave attempts to tell a complex story, but often asides from making the decision to wrap up each chapter at the 48 page mark (although book 0 will stretch to 96 sadly ) I often have to take breathes of fresh air between serious storyline bits in the story. This either utilizes either necessary violence, sex or as of late, proxies as an excuse to bring humour into the story. (Admittedly whilst my own work is more underground than a dead body, i'm taken this opportunity to rewrite some of the dialogue for Book 1 and 2, and see if anyone notices. = P )
Otherwise, good pointers guys. I don't really have a life that revolves around comics these days, so i pray everyone else has better luck with it than me.
But on the subject of updates, it depends how passionate you are or how determined you are to get a story out of the way. 1 to 2 days on separate days is the fair and realistic outcome. Ideally i would like to update my site exclusively on weekends myself. If you're really brave i would attempt 4 or 5 odd pages a week. If you've got a website ticker on your website that means more readers and credibility in your pocket. To get the mentality for that rate though, i think you'd need to treat it like a kind of job where you're between doing it like your life depends on it and not getting worked up on the passion so that you can churn out work like nobody's business. Might not be realistic but worth its rate in encouragement IMO.
On the subject of readers, as i said in the other thread, keep to the audience, and maybe setup one of those website update tickers or an RSS feed if you're uber flash so it's getting out there more.
Good luck apart from that. Remember, stay Gory. _________________

Hey guys--hope everyone had a happy new year!
Buz--Thanks for the compliments-- I'm a big Jae Lee fan, as well! Also, I've been checking out some of the Living Corpse stuff--some really cool stuff, and all the best luck on the upcoming film!
MrTuke--Thanks for the advice. I am absolutely dedicated to this book, and to my audience (once i get one), and most importantly to telling an exciting, scary, horror story. This project is my baby and I'm going to continue putting a lot of time into it, and I just hope there will be people out there who will enjoy it! If I can get further ahead of myself I might try to update more than once a week, but as of now I'm not quite there yet.
I know I'm relatively new here at horrornewsnetwork, but this place is a great resource, and I look forward to conversing with you all more in the future!

Hey Guys!
Hope you're getting a chance to check out Dead Meat over at www.eatdeadmeat.com! It's gonna be a long project, and I know there's not a ton up just yet, but I hope people are enjoying it!
I also just wanted to throw out there that if you want to follow Dead Meat on twitter, you can at www.twitter.com/deadmeatcomic, and on facebook at www.facebook.com/deadmeatcomic. Both of these will alert you to when any new posts go up, and any other updates concerning the comic.
Pretty good so far, lettering is tough to read though. Keeping the material coming is the key for web books. Sporadic posting of new stuff causes people to lose interest. I appreciat you dropping here and keeping it in front of our noses _________________ _______________________

Thanks for the heads up, Paperdragon--That's the first mention I've heard of the text being hard to read, I'll definitely look into it.
I update the comic every monday, and I try to update the blog every week as well, but definitely the comic every monday, so there'll always be something new every week!
I'm glad you appreciate the updates here--I didn't want to make it seem like I'm forcing it down anyone's throats, but I'll continue to update here for those who are interested!

Hey Everyone!
Today marks the end of the first Chapter of Dead Meat, and I hope everyone who's had a chance to check it out is ready for Chapter 2, because it starts next Monday!
This coming weekend, I'll be at the Boston Comic Con--I'll be at table AA-514 with my buddy and fellow artist Doug Cowan, and we'll have all sorts of good stuff for anyone who wants to stop by, including prints, commissioned sketches, and ESPECIALLY, a very limited number of special sketch-cover print copies of Dead Meat Chapter 1.
If you're at the convention, feel free to stop by!
