Staff member, Wayne Lackey, has submitted his latest article: Flash-Drac: Marvel’s Dracula Part 1 – 1972 to 1983.

Following the relaxation of horror-related restrictions by the Comics Code Authority, Marvel launched their line of classic monster titles in the early 1970s, including The Tomb of Dracula (ToD), Werewolf by Night, and The Frankenstein Monster. Marvel’s version of Dracula was introduced in the first issue of ToD in 1972. The premise of ToD was a little different than typical comic book fare, given that the series’ protagonist was a villain; this was uncommon during the Bronze Age, and for a time ToD held the distinction of being the longest-running title with a villain as the main character at 70 issues.

Still have the entire run of ToD in the long boxes in the Comic Cave. Took me up until about three years ago to complete, but it was well worth the efforts. Great series and Wayne is right in that there was a great cast of supporting characters.

There sure don't write comics the way they used to. Sad

Dracula was THE MAN in the 70s! It was incredible that the series, with a villain as the main character went for so long. Credit great writing and artwork!

TypH, I'd certainly recommend almost any issue in Tomb of Dracula vol. 1. Get your hands on some back issues or the Essential TOD trades, vol. 1-3. Essential TOD Volume 4 covered some of the other comics and magazines in this timeframe, like the Dracula Lives! magazine; I haven't given it a proper read-through yet, but just based on my cursory glance I'd say the overall quality of TOD vol. 1 is better than just about any other Marvel Dracula-related material out there. Not that other Marvel writers all wrote him badly (although some did), the Wolfman/Colan creative team just produced a higher-quality product. Check it out for yourself, though, I'm sure you'll enjoy it...!

Yeah, Rob, I can't remember where I read or heard that comment about TOD at one point being the longest running comic will a villain as the main character, but it didn't mean much to me at the time. Some time later, though, I thought about it and that was kind of a big deal back in the day. Think about the kinds of comics being produced by Marvel and other publishers at the time, even the horror-related books, and to be able to get an audience to care about a vampire - a self-professed murderer and despot - took a great deal of character development from Marv Wolfman, and it didn't hurt to have an ace in the hole like Gene Colan on pencils. The first time I saw Colan's art was the first Captain Marvel story in Marvel Super-Heroes #12-13, and I was really impressed that someone who could draw like that would lend their talents to a comic book publisher. Great stuff on all sides, we'll likely never see a book of that consistent quality again. Crying or Very sad
