DVD & Blu-ray Releases: October 14, 2014

By: Sean Brickley

38 releases this week, fellow fiends.  Of the 31 movies this week I’d say the one that will cost you the most would be the limited edition Texas Chain Saw Massacre 40th Anniversary Black Maria Blu-ray Box Set.  Plus it will probably look SO cool in your epic DVD collection.  There are quite a few classics coming out this week as well: Jaws, a double feature Tales From The Crypt / Vault Of Horror Blu-ray, Evils Of The Night, Jennifer, some Bela Lugosi stuff, etc.  This is also the release week for Showtime’s first season of Penny Dreadful.  Plus there are a bunch of newer movies being released on various formats that will most likely make you say, “Ohhhh, so that’s what happened to <insert name of 1990’s movie/television star here>….”  As always, pleasant viewing.

When they decide to make a stop in a small tavern in the Basque countryside, the group encounters a series of local wackos. Falling victim to a mysterious spell, they soon find themselves the honored guests of a fractured family of witches who are preparing for an ancient ritual. More colorful characters begin to enter the picture, including a pair of hapless cops hot on the trail, a defecting vixen witch and Jos’s controlling ex-wife, and the situation spirals further out of control, heading towards a jaw-dropping climax. From its opening moments involving a shootout between a series of street performers in costume (including Minnie Mouse, the Invisible Man and Jesus), it’s clear that director Alex de la Iglesia is in top form here. Capturing all the wit of his previous films, but employing a much more streamlined energy, he serves up the laughs, action and thrills in spades.
