Have you ever wondered what happened to Will Byers during Season One of Stranger Things? Wonder no longer! According to the official press release, Dark Horse Comics and Netflix are teaming up (starting in September of 2018) to produce officially licensed “…comics and young adult graphic novels expanding the world of Hawkins and its many inhabitants.”
Dark Horse President and Founder Mike Richardson stated that “Dark Horse is known for championing stories and storytellers. We are so excited to work with Netflix to bring the world of Stranger Things to comics.”
The first four issue mini-series will be written by Jody Houser (Faith, Orphan Black, Mother Panic) with art by penciller Stefano Martino (Legs Weaver, Nathan Never) and inker Keith Champagne (JSA, Superboy). The story will “…follow(s) Will Byers as he enters a dimension of decay and destruction where he must use his wits and resolve to dodge the pursuit of the Demogorgon and escape the Upside Down.”
Dark Horse has a long history of publishing comics based on officially licensed movie properties, beginning in the late 1980s with Aliens, Predator, The Terminator, The Thing, and Star Wars (before Disney bought Lucas Film and Marvel began publishing the title once again).
It is not clear if these stories will be “cannon”, but it is mentioned in the press release that the deal will focus on “…expanding the world of Hawkins and its many inhabitants”, so it is certainly a possibility.
