Constantine #1 Review

Writer: Ray Fawkes and Jeff Lemire
Artist: Renato Guedes
Publisher: DC Comics

Synopsis: The star of JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK is unleashed in his all-new ongoing series! Liar, cheater, manipulator John Constantine is all of these, and yet he uses these skills and more to protect the world from the darkest corners of the DC Universe.

Our thoughts: Well I have to be fair and start this by saying my favorite comic series is Hellblazer. I was really disappointed when DC Comics decided to remove John Constantine from Vertigo and bring him in to the regular DC Universe. To me, Constantine just fit better in Vertigo. He faced scarier demons, he could be more of an anti-hero, etc. Now he is in a universe again with Superman, etc. and it just doesn’t feel right.

I miss the old gang… Peter Milligan, Giuseppe Camuncoli and Stefano Landini. That crew, which had a long run (and the best in my opinion) on Hellblazer really got the character right. Nothing against the current Constantine creators, but this just doesn’t feel the same.

Back to Constantine #1… The story was ok I guess. Fawkes and Lemire try to show fans a peek at what a bastard Constantine can be. It doesn’t work as well as the Constantine we knew in the Vertigo Universe. The artwork was solid but way too “superhero” like for this character.

I have a feeling that the loyal readership of Hellblazer may not like this version of John Constantine. I fear that low sales may be the only way to get Hellblazer back.
