Justin Kroll of Variety broke the news today that Chloe Moretz will star in the lead role of director Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria remake. Earlier this year, The Playlist reported that Moretz dropped out of Universal’s Little Mermaid film to pursue other films.
It appears as if Moretz decided to trade in her fins for a pair of ballet slippers as she will join the previously announced co-stars Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson. Kroll suggests that Moretz is looking to add more adult roles based on this choice, stating that “Moretz has been drawn to more adult fare following her breakout performance in adult action pic Kick-Ass. While plenty of those pics were non-genre based like Hugo and The Equalizer, the 19-year-old has done plenty of work in pics with horror or supernatural elements, including Carrie, Let Me In, and Dark Shadows.”
Original director and co-writer Dario Argento is not attached to the film and has no role in producing the remake. The master of Italian “Giallo” cinema’s lack of involvement has raised some red flags, but Argento’s countryman Guadagnino has long considered the remake a “passion project” and he “…has been at the forefront of getting this remake off the ground.”
No start date for production has been set at this time. Argento fans are sure to be “passionate” about the project as well, for better or for worse.
