Fans of the classic Sega titles “Altered Beast” and “Streets of Rage” will be thrilled to learn that Stories International has entered into a collaboration with Circle of Confusion to produce both big and little screen versions of the popular video games.  Stories Intl. is the production company of Sega Group.  Circle of Confusion produces such film and television titles as “Fear the Walking Dead”, “Outcast” and “Mr. Right.”
President and CEO of Stories International, Tomoya Suzuki, will partner with Circle of Confusion’s Lawrence Mattis to bring these games to the mass American audiences in entertainment form.  Stories Intl. also has their eyes on other popular Sega franchises, including “Shinobi”, “Virtua Figher” and “The House of the Dead”, which has already received the film treatment back in 2003 to limited success (thanks Uwe Boll!).  “These are some of the most well loved SEGA games, and we are thrilled to be working with Stories to adapt them into major film and television franchises,” Mattis stated.
While no other details have yet been made public regarding the film/television adaptations for either “Altered Beast” (which involves a centurion who can shape-shift into a werewolf and is resurrected by Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena from the Underworld)  or “Streets of Rage”, their rabid fanbases eagerly await additional news.  Keep checking HNN for details as they become available. read more

Return of the Living Dead’s Don Calfa Dead at 76

Horror News Network is sad to announce the death of Don Calfa, star of Return of the Living Dead, who died Thursday at 76.

Anyone who loved punk rock and horror in the 1980’s discovered and loved Dan O’Bannon’s Return of the Living Dead.  And aside from all the young actors who portrayed those punk rockers, the film also featured performances from three Hollywood vets: Clu Gulager, James Karen, and Don Calfa as the adults who were just as nuts as their younger counterparts.

Calfa played Ernie in the 1985 film, a mortician that enjoys his work just “a little too much”.  The vast majority of the second half of the film takes place in Ernie’s funeral home, although he is a bit reluctant to let all of those mohawked punks inside at first.  read more

Wolf Creek Director Greg McLean’s The Belko Experiment Trailer Released

Ever wonder what it would be like to be trapped with your co-workers and supervisors in an office building indefinitely?  How about adding a little death and mayhem in the form of a Battle Royale-style “kill or be killed” game?  Well, wonder no longer!  From the minds of writer  James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and director Greg McLean (Wolf Creek) comes The Belko Experiment.

McLean spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the project stating that “Belko is an incredibly crazy script by James Gunn. There’s nothing else like it. Trust me. It’s a wild, wild movie. I’m so glad I got to direct it. James was great. We have a similar sensibility over the movies we like and the references we like. So, we clicked over those things. I think he’s a great writer, but he was great fun to work with, and really respectful of me taking over the project, and directing it.” read more

Director Brad Peyton Reveals Details About Monster Video Game Adaptation Rampage

Brad Peyton, the director of the upcoming film monster-mash video game adaptation Rampage, recently spoke to We Got This Covered about the tone of the film.

Peyton promises that the film, based on the original arcade game, is “…going to be a lot more emotional, a lot scarier and a lot more real than you’d expect.”  Peyton went on to say that he was “…really excited about Rampage. It’s a monster film, so the stuff that I did on Incarnate, stretching my muscles in the horror space helped. This “small, character piece” with horror in it trained me to get ready for [Rampage]. Obviously, it’s a much bigger movie and it’s meant for a broader audience, but there still horror elements, there’s still a monster movie at the core. And I get to work with Dwayne [Johnson] again, I’m so excited about it.”   read more
