Bats Galore in Netflix’s ‘The Silence’ Trailer

It appears as if Netflix is ready to chase every horror trend from 2018 in Annabelle and Wish Upon director John Leonetti ‘s upcoming bat horror film The Silence.

Not only does The Silence include a sound gimmick (A Quiet Place), a healthy dose of another sense-altering twist (the protagonist is deaf), but it also stars Netflix’s very own Sabrina, Kiernan Shipka (apparently, blindfolds would have been too derivative for Netflix viewers, who just enjoyed a similar tale entitled Bird Box.)

The premise revolves around a new, aggressive bat species called Vesps who begin to hunt humans by using their special hearing abilities. Shipka’s Ally Andrews (who has been deaf for three years) and her family seek solace in an out-of-the-way location, only to discover that the place is overrun by an evil cult who are more than happy to capitalize on Ally’s “heightened senses”.  Talk about a “wrong turn”! (On second thought, that was a 2003 film starring Eliza Dushku, who also got lost in the woods, although she had to contend with some inbred cannibals, and not killer bats and cult members, just to clarify).  Like Netflix’s last foray into original horror films (Bird Box), The Silence is also based on a novel, this one by writer Tim Lebbon.

The Silence will be released on Netflix on April 10 and also stars Stanley Tucci, Miranda Otto, John Corbett, Kate Trotter and Kyle Breitkopf
