‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ Revival Season Finally Gets Home Video Release

Nickelodeon has taken long enough, 2019’s Are You Afraid of the Dark revival season is finally getting a DVD release and not only does it contain all three chapters of Mr. Tophat’s Carnival of Doom but three classic episodes from the series original run as well; The Tale of Laughing in the Dark, The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner and The Tale of the Dead Man’s Float.

Originally created by by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel for YTV and Nickelodeon, Are You Afraid of the Dark ran on Saturday nights from 1991 to 1996, returned for two later seasons from 1998 to 2000, then again for the revival series in October 2019 that was three episodes directed by Dean Israelite and written by Ben David Grabinski. A followup season had been green lit in February 2020.

Each episode began with members of The Midnight Society gathering in the middle the woods where a single member would tell a scary story which the audience would see play out. The stories would begin with the teller saying “Submitted for the approval of The Midnight Society, I call this story (title of episode)” and throw “Midnight Dust” on the fire which caused the flame to rise and produce a white smoke over the title card.

Are you Afraid of the Dark‘s revival season is set for home release on August 11, check back soon for more!

Since Mark was four years old he has always loved the horror genre, even when his mother would be a good parent and not let him watch such films. It was when he would sneak into the Horror section at the video store called Tommy K's that he would see all of the VHS covers of classics like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. During his time as a journalism major and news staff writer at Southern CT State University, he had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren before a seminar in 2009 at the Lyman Center on campus.
