‘Winchester’ A Top Contender in This Year’s Razzies Race

Although horror films may have been underrepresented during this year’s Academy Awards Nominations, they certainly had a solid showing at the 39th Annual Razzie Awards for the worst films of the year, with Winchester leading the pack with four nominations.

Winchester, a film loosely based on the alleged hauntings at the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, is up for Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Helen Mirren),  Worst Director(s) (Michael & Peter Spierig), and Worst Screenplay.  Winchester was a likely candidate for this type of attention, earning a score of 13% on Rotten Tomatoes (and a 34% Audience Score).

Winchester was not alone in garnering nominations this year, as fellow horror films Slender Man and Meg also punched their tickets to the awards ceremony, with recognition in the Worst Supporting Actress category (Slender Man’s Jaz Sinclair) and the Worst Remake or Rip-off category (The Meg).

All three films will be facing some very stiff competition in the form of John Travolta’s Gatti, which lead the nominees with the most nominations of any film this year (in a total of five categories).  Gatti pulled off the almost impossible 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes earlier in the year, and is widely viewed as Travolta’s worst performance in his career.

The winners will be announced on Saturday February 23, one night before the Oscars and be sure to check back with Horror News Network to see if any of the nominees go home with a Golden Raspberry statute.

‘Winchester’ Gets a New Trailer and a New Name

Back in October we bought you news and the teaser trailer for Winchester: The House that Ghosts Built (see that story here) starring Helen Miren as Sarah Winchester. Well now, a month before its theatrical release, comes the full trailer and word that they’ve shortened the title to just Winchester. Makes sense…rolls off the tongue a bit easier, I suppose.

Slated for a February 2nd release, Winchester tells the story (based on factual events) of the famed “Winchester Mystery House” and its construction by widow Sarah Winchester of Winchester Firearms fame.

While the trailer reeks of all of the same jump scares and tricks that lurk behind every ill-fated “haunted house” film these days, I’ll hold judgement until I see the finished product.

Stay gory my friends.

Trailer Drops for “Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built” Starring Helen Mirren

Like most of us horror nerds probably did as pre-teens, I devoured all books I could find on serial killers, ghosts, demons and unsolved mysteries. During these sessions, I would often come across stories of California’s “Winchester Mystery House” (so-named by Harry Houdini).

Sarah Winchester, the wife of William Winchester – owner of Winchester Firearms, relocated from New Haven, CT to San Jose, CA following the death of her husband and purchased a small 8-room farmhouse on a large parcel of land and immediately hired workers to begin adding on to the house. With no master plans, Sarah had numerous workers who supposedly worked 365 days a year for 38 straight years to transform the 8-room farmhouse into a 7-story mansion consisting of 161 rooms including 40 bedrooms, two basements and three elevators.

The fun (and mysterious) part of the story is that what she had them create, makes no sense. Since used no architect and had no master plans, the home contains numerous oddities such as doors that open to blank walls and stairs that go nowhere and end abruptly. We’re not even positive that the whole house has been seen and mapped; a new room was discovered as recently as 2016.

Legend has it that she built this monstrosity to house the ghosts of those killed by her husbands firearms…

Directors Michael and Peter Spierig (Daybreakers) tackle this legend in their new film Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built starring Academy Award winner Helen Mirren as Sarah Winchester. According to Deadline, “the pic centers what appears to be only a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman’s madness. But Sarah Winchester is not building it for herself […] she is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the family.”

Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built is slated for a February 2nd, 2018 release. Keep it locked to Horror News Network for more news on Winchester and enjoy the new trailer below.

Stay gory my friends.

Michael Spierig & Peter Spierig to Direct WINCHESTER

Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig (Daybreakers, Predestinaton) are attached to direct Winchester. The supernatural thriller is based on the infamous Winchester House of San Jose, CA.  The pair wrote the script as well.

The story is centered around the heir to the Winchester firearms fortune Sarah Winchester, whose husband and child past away suddenly.  She believed she was cursed by the legacy of “gun that won the west” and proceeded to consult a medium. After the meeting, she began construction of the massive mansion that became famous.

Imagination Design Works, which has rights to the mansion, endorsed and developed the film, in addition to allowing filming on the premises.

‘Supernatural’’s Milestone 300th Episode Airs Thursday

The CW will be airing the 300th episode of the TV show Supernatural this Thursday, February 7. This is yet another huge milestone for a show that is already the longest running sci-fi/fantasy series on television. Created by Eric Kripke and starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as Sam and Dean Winchester (respectively), Supernatural originally debuted on September 13, 2005 and this series has surpassed all expectations on longevity. A familiar face who appeared in the pilot and the early seasons was Jeffrey Dean Morgan as their father, John Winchester. Many readers will know him as Negan on The Walking Dead. Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be returning to the show for this milestone episode once again in his role as father to the Winchesters. Expect many tears to be shed at this reunion, both on the show and by fans watching the drama unfold.  Currently in its 14th season, the show has already been renewed so the monster hunting will continue for at least another year.

Buy / Wait / Rent: May 2018 Blu-Ray Releases

We sift through the new release heap so you don’t have to!

Welcome to Horror News Network’s Buy / Wait / Rent, a monthly article devoted to the most highly-anticipated horror releases on blu-ray. Here you will find the best home video releases of each month, along with our opinion on whether each film is a must-own on the first day of release, something you should wait to buy until it goes on sale, or something you’re better off renting for a one-time watch. And now, on to the notable new releases of May 2018!

5/1/18:

RENT:

Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell will likely satisfy fans who are disappointed about the cancellation of the Kevin Bacon reboot series, and it has a solid cast (including Jamie Kennedy) despite its direct-to-video status. Fans who aren’t series die-hards might want to rent this one until more reviews start to roll out. Winchester released to very poor critical acclaim in spite of solid casting choices like Hellen Mirren and Jason Clarke. Those who are curious about the admittedly-interesting “real life” subject matter should give this one a rental.

5/8/18:

WAIT:

The MVD Rewind Collection is releasing one of Heather Locklear’s strangest movies on blu-ray for the first time! Serious Swamp Thing fans will want this one on their shelves next to the Wes Craven original, but most general collectors could give this release a few months before picking it up at a better sale price.

5/15/18:

BUY:

Shout! Factory’s It’s Alive trilogy falls into a sort of gray area. While the Larry Cohen classic certainly isn’t for everyone, the current pre-order pricing on this set is so good that I don’t expect it to drop tremendously in later sales. I recommend that fans of the franchise pick this one up on day one.

5/22/18:

WAIT:

May 22nd’s two major horror-related releases couldn’t be on two further ends of the spectrum, but they both come with “wait” recommendations. The early reviews of the upcoming 4K UHD/HDR transfer of Jurassic Park have been mixed, and it’s too early to tell how they will turn out. Furthermore, Universal has historically dropped the prices on their major box sets significantly in just a few weeks after each release. Even better, fans of the franchise who only really love the first title will eventually be able to pick up individual releases later down the road. Arrow Video’s The Last House on the Left is certainly not for everyone, but its current pre-order pricing is attractive. Fans (who know what they’re in for and know they want the definitive version of this film in their collections) who don’t lock in at that pricing will want to wait for a sale going forward.

5/29/18:

BUY:

Of all of May’s releases, I am most excited for the 4K UHD edition of Annihilation by a mile! Director Alex Garland’s (Ex Machina) film is beautifully shot and it’s going to look stunning in the new format. The only caveat is that this release will be a Best Buy exclusive for a couple of months, so fans who want to own this one right away should pre-order it or pick it up as soon as it becomes available.
